TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - A number of artists are currently participating in an exhibition at the Sangkring Art Space in Yogyakarta from October 2 to 12 named "Hutan di Titik Nol" (Forest at Point Zero). Nine pieces are on display as a series of events during the Climate Art Festival.
Artists who are participating in this exhibition include Arya Panjalu, Arahmaiani, Setu Legi, Katia Engel, Sara Nuytemans, Natalie Driemeyer and Anna Peschke, and the Taring Padi art group.
Artist Arya Panjalu put up an installation art piece named, ‘Maybe It's Not Always About Trying to Fix Something Broken.’
"This is an analogy of how humans strive hard to save the environment," said the Yogyakarta Art Institute alumni.
For Arya, people can begin to save the environment by doing the little things first. Arya’s piece raises the awareness of city dwellers about the fragility of forests.
Arya’s piece was bunch of green plastic plants, similar to a mushroom, stuck on top of an oval shaped table. The plants are spread across the table, filling the cracks in the teak wood, formed to look like a map of Indonesia, with round leaves sheltering these lines. Not far from there, a nude mannequin sits, while bowing towards the table, on top of a teak wood stool. Both its hands are holding the branch of a tree, making it seem like it is about to plant the tree.
